Tesla's Lost Millions
Share
Shaan shares a story about his early Tesla investment and why he sold too early, missing out on massive gains.
"I owned Tesla stock when it was really low. I remember at the time Tesla was valued at maybe 2-3 billion, and I invested in it. My dad was like 'Tesla, they don't make any money' and I said 'Yeah but I think they're going to be big.'
He said 'It's already valued at 3 billion.' At the time I think GM was like 25 billion. It was the first stock I bought - I put in like 25K. I calculated it would have been $5 million if I held, but what I did was turn the 25K into 125K and sold.
I sold because I started to get suspicious that this guy really over-promises. He over-promises on when something will be built, how good it'll be. He's pretty much wrong on the timing always. He's been saying the Cybertruck is coming out, saying the Model 3 would be more affordable than it is, charging people for autopilot that's not full self-driving for multiple years now, always saying it's right around the corner.
I remember reading stuff about people saying this guy's a fraud, Tesla's a scam - it was very convincing. They went through 20 CFOs in like a 4 year time span. But in the end, he threaded the needle and pulled it off. I was $5 million wrong for selling early."
