Vibe Coding

The shift from centralized software creation to personalized, AI-generated tools is enabling anyone to build custom software through natural language descriptions and iteration.
The shift to personal software
- All software historically built centrally by talented people trying to appeal to everyone
- Similar to how newspaper industry worked - central editorial control for mass audience
- Now moving to highly personalized software tailored to individual needs and current life situations
- Not just "Sam who likes business biographies" but "Sam who likes business biographies and is going through these specific challenges right now"
- Mass personalization became possible through:
- Supply explosion - everyone became a creator (bloggers, tweets, videos, images)
- Algorithmic curation - automatic editorial selection based on individual signals
- No human editor needed to choose what goes on your front page
Vibe coding explained
- You describe roughly what you want in natural language
- The AI makes it, you iterate by saying "yeah but actually I wanted this"
- Like ordering at a table where the chef keeps remaking until you get it right
- You don't know exactly what you want initially, but you "feel the vibes" and get there eventually
- No technical terms needed - go straight to describing the end result you want
Vibe coding beyond code
- Now happening for other skills beyond programming
- Example: Music creation without knowing Ableton, Fruity Loops, or what a MIDI is
- Just describe what you want: "hype basketball intro music for a high school team, high energy build up, make the crowd go wild"
- AI figures out instruments, beats, structure without you specifying technical details
- Can iterate: "add a big drop at the beginning, lower in tone, more masculine"
Presentation design example
- Tool that makes presentations look professional with animations
- Takes static slides and automatically creates smooth transitions between them
- Like Prezi but AI-powered
- Uses video transition technology (Cling) applied to slide decks
- Shows start and end frames, AI automatically animates the steps in between
The opportunity landscape
- Competition is harder - more players in the game
- But opportunity is massively bigger - like adding 50x more chairs in musical chairs
- Every product in every category is up for grabs because AI changes what's possible
- Whole new categories emerging
- The multiplier on possible ways to win outweighs increased competition
The right mindset for existing professionals
- Wrong game: Try to beat AI geniuses who are technically oriented and working on it 24/7
- Right game: Already top 10% in your domain (business, content, etc.) - just get to 50th percentile in AI
- AI multiplies against all your other existing skills
- Don't need to be top 1-10% in AI - just "dangerous enough"
- Use domain knowledge from 10-20 years in your industry combined with basic AI skills
- Companies need "as many AI guys as you can have"
- One billion-dollar company doubled profit margin just by:
- Improving customer support with AI
- Making developers more productive
- Replacing junior programmers who weren't good at using AI
Real-world application
- Custom tools for personal needs - like analyzing business biographies for specific life situations
- Building without traditional coding knowledge
- Rapid iteration based on feel rather than technical specifications
