Charisma Discount Method
Share
A framework for evaluating advice by adjusting for the presenter's natural charisma and communication style.
The Charisma Discount Concept
- More charismatic/persuasive people require a "discount factor" on their advice
- Less charismatic people (deadpan delivery) may need an "amplifier" on their excitement
- Similar to an audio mixer - need to adjust levels up or down based on speaker
How to Apply the Discount
-
For highly persuasive people:
- Be careful not to get overly excited
- Don't completely dismiss their ideas
- Apply skepticism proportional to their persuasiveness
- Remember being persuasive doesn't equal being right
-
For low-key presenters:
- If they show excitement, it likely means much more
- "Pretty good" might actually mean "incredible"
- Need to amplify their stated enthusiasm level
- Example: When someone says "I think I like this" → They probably love it
Real World Applications
-
Content Creators
- Primary job is creating engaging content
- Need to produce regular new material
- May prioritize novelty over practicality
- Best advice might be simple but doesn't make good content
-
Book Authors
- Example: Malcolm Gladwell books need this filter
- Remember theories aren't necessarily facts
- Need to maintain skepticism despite compelling writing
-
Investment Advice
- Being persuasive about an investment doesn't make it good
- Need to separate excitement from actual opportunity
- Important to avoid talking yourself into bad ideas
