Men's Support Groups
Share
Men's groups provide a powerful space for men to develop relational skills, process emotions, and grow through peer support and accountability.
How Men's Groups Work:
- Meet once a month with about six men who respect each other
- Each member silently writes down what's top of mind on post-it notes
- Those with the most pressing issues take turns sharing
- Others provide feedback and hold each other accountable
- Creates a safe space for men to express anger, sadness, and shame
Benefits:
- Potentially more effective than therapy for men (especially since most therapists are female)
- Creates a "council of peers" who can truly relate to each other's experiences
- Helps process shame in a supportive environment
- Takes focus off self-centered problems by helping others
- Provides perspective from others who have faced similar challenges
- Normalizes difficult experiences (like job loss or other setbacks)
Implementation:
- Find a few respected male friends
- Commit to meeting monthly
- Create a safe space for vulnerable discussions
- Support each other in achieving personal goals
- Not complicated to start but yields significant growth
Impact:
- Logan has witnessed significant growth in her husband and other men in his group
- Helps men process emotions they typically hold inside
- Provides relief even when not directly addressing one's own problems
- Transforms shame-inducing experiences into manageable parts of life
