90-Second Emotion Reset
Share
A technique developed by Tony Robbins to manage negative emotions and maintain a high-value state of happiness by containing suffering to a brief window.
Core Concept
- Give yourself exactly 90 seconds to fully experience negative emotions
- After 90 seconds, you must let it go completely
- Focus on changing the internal story that's causing the suffering
- Make your happiness "expensive" - don't let small things take it away
The Process
- When something negative happens:
- Allow yourself to feel the emotion fully
- Set a timer for 90 seconds
- Experience the suffering without restriction
- At 90 seconds, take a deep breath
- Consciously shift your narrative
Key Insights
- Most people don't even use the full 90 seconds
- Usually done within 24-30 seconds
- The time constraint makes the suffering feel less necessary
- Without timeboxing:
- Small events can ruin entire days
- Problems can spiral into weeks or months of negativity
- Depression can develop from unchecked negative emotions
The Philosophy Behind It
- Happiness should be "expensive" like Louis Vuitton
- Don't let small things steal your joy
- Make it harder for external events to affect your state
- Separate the event from the story
- It's not the event causing suffering
- It's the story you tell yourself about the event
- Focus on response over reaction
- Reactions are impulsive and primal
- Responses are chosen and controlled
Origin Story
- Developed by Tony Robbins after an interaction with a guru in India
- Guru pointed out how easily Robbins lost his positive state
- Made him realize his happiness was "too cheap"
- Led to creating this technique to maintain a more stable positive state
