De Beers Created Diamond Tradition
Share
A story about how De Beers created the modern diamond engagement ring tradition through marketing.
"De Beers is a diamond company that's been around for about 100 years. In the 1940s, they ran this campaign called 'A Diamond is Forever.' Up until the 1940s, diamonds were special, but they weren't nearly as special as we think they are now.
They came up with this insane idea in their campaign about how much you should spend on a diamond - they said roughly 2 to 3 months of your salary, which is outrageous. That campaign is credited with helping shape the diamond industry.
They even ran further campaigns that said on certain anniversaries you have to get your wife a diamond. That alone helped shape the entire diamond industry as we know it today."
