80-Year-Old Coach Fixes CEO

A story about an executive coach named Glow who had a unique ability to get executives to be more authentic and address uncomfortable situations.

"There's this woman named Glow who is the executive coach for many top executives at Twitch, including the COO who she's been coaching for 14 years. When she comes to our executive off-sites, she transforms the typical Type A environment. Instead of just talking about goals and plans, she forces people to get real and be more human.

She's around 80 years old and she's a master at this. I remember our CEO Emmett had this speaking tick where when he's thinking hard or disagrees with someone, he'd start grabbing this thing on his neck and do it for like 10 minutes while talking. Everyone noticed it, but nobody would ever say anything to him about it.

The first time I knew she was a baller was during one of the big exec off-sites - she just straight up said 'Emmett, knock it off with that thing you're doing on your neck.' I was shocked. But she said it in such a harmless way that he took no offense, just said 'Oh yeah, thanks' and they moved on.

She uses sophisticated techniques too. She'll notice if you hesitate when speaking and say something like 'You know, you kind of hesitated when you said that. I know you're a confident guy, you typically don't hesitate - what was that?' And then suddenly you're pouring your soul out to Glow. She just knows how to open everybody up."
