Eskimo Snow Mental Model
Share
Just as Eskimos have many words for snow, entrepreneurs need different ways to understand luck and risk. Here's a framework for understanding the different types of each.
The 4 Levels of Luck
-
Blind Luck (Level 1)
- Pure chance with no input from you
- Examples: Being born healthy, winning a raffle
- Can't be controlled or influenced
-
Motion-Based Luck (Level 2)
- Fortune favors the bold
- Increases odds through action and movement
- Creates more surface area for luck through activity
- Example: Chance encounters from being active
-
Pattern Recognition Luck (Level 3)
- Chance favors the prepared mind
- Ability to spot opportunities others miss
- Requires preparation and expertise
- Example: Recognizing unique investment opportunities from seeing many deals
-
Reputational Luck (Level 4)
- Luck finds you through your reputation
- Opportunities come to you because of who you are
- Built through being known well in your field
- Example: Being sought out for opportunities due to expertise
The 4 Flavors of Risk
-
Mediocrity Risk
- The danger of being "just okay"
- Not bad enough to fail, not good enough to be great
- Wastes your most valuable asset: time
- More dangerous than outright failure
-
Safety Risk
- The risk of playing it too safe
- Not taking enough risk to achieve your dreams
- Putting future success at risk by being too cautious now
-
Eyes Wide Shut Risk
- Assuming something is safe when it isn't
- Not seeing hidden dangers
- Example: 2008 housing crisis - people thought mortgages were safe
-
Business Risk Types
- Market Risk: Will anyone want this?
- Execution Risk: Can we operate this effectively?
- Technical Risk: Can we build this?
- Important to know which type you're taking on
The goal isn't to avoid risk but to understand and work around it effectively.
