Key Hiring Wins

A discussion about how Sam Parr found key team members for The Hustle through different channels.

"Colby worked at a PR firm where he was doing copywriting work. Trung came through Eamon Troy, who was a mutual friend and investor of The Hustle. Steph I found on Twitter because I read her blog.

When we sold to HubSpot, they said 'Wow you guys have a lot of churn.' I explained that's actually quite normal in the editorial industry - you hire a bunch of people and either fire them or there's a mutual agreement it won't work out.

Once you find the winners, you go all in on them. Trung is what I call a 'made man', Steph a 'made woman.' Whenever Steph wants to do something cool, it's 'Sounds good, what do you need?' These people are proven hitmakers.

When interviewing, I always ask about the bottom fourth of the resume - like college classes and activities - because I want them to entertain me during the interview. You need people who are good at storytelling."

In 2016, he founded The Hustle, a business news media company that started in his kitchen with just $12 and grew to eight figures in revenue.

Sam remains the host of the popular business podcast, My First Million, and continues to start and sell companies. He also co-founded Hampton, a highly vetted community for entrepreneurs, founders, and CEOs, and teaches people to write better through his platform, Copy That.
