Boxing Builds Bonds

Sam Parr shares how he uses casual boxing sessions to bond with friends who visit him.

"When I have friends in town, I tell them to come to my house at 5pm and wear tennis shoes. I've bought tons of wraps, and when they arrive, I throw them hand wraps and say 'we're gonna box today.'

We warm up with some mitts, I show them how to punch, and then I give them an extra mouth guard. We don't hit hard, but occasionally I'll pop them really hard in the stomach just so they can feel alive. I let them punch me too - I had a guy chip my tooth the other day.

It's been the greatest bonding experience. I've done it with men, women, everyone. With women, I'll let them pop me real hard and I'll hit them in the stomach. It's awesome. I love doing this with boxing - it brings you together, makes you feel alive, and it's a fun sport because we can do it in my garage. You normally don't box because it's embarrassing to try that in front of a bunch of people.

When we start, I show them by moving slow, just kind of tapping them, and I say 'look, that's all we're doing, we're just gonna barely touch each other.'"
