Eisenhower Matrix Prioritization

A prioritization framework that helps identify and focus on high-impact activities while managing urgent vs non-urgent tasks.

Core Framework: The Eisenhower Matrix

  • Two intersecting axes create four quadrants
    • Vertical axis: Impact (Low to High)
    • Horizontal axis: Urgent to Non-urgent
  • Primary focus should be on urgent + high impact tasks first
  • Key challenge: Most people default to urgent + low impact tasks
  • Important but non-urgent tasks often get neglected until too late

Types of Productivity Approaches

  • Efficient Productive

    • Focus on completing many tasks well
    • Work consistent hours (e.g., 9-5)
    • Emphasis on clearing to-do lists
    • Good at tying up loose ends
  • Effective Productive (recommended for CEOs/entrepreneurs)

    • Identify 1-2 tasks with disproportionate rewards
    • Go "overboard" (120-180%) on key tasks
    • Do 0% on non-critical items
    • May work in intense bursts rather than consistent hours

Implementation Tips

  • Identify the 80/20 of any project
  • Focus on one high-impact outcome daily
  • Don't let non-critical tasks clutter your mind
  • Important but non-urgent tasks need dedicated attention
    • Example: Tax strategy, estate planning
    • These become urgent when it's too late
  • Be willing to ignore low-impact tasks completely

Warning Signs

  • Avoiding high-impact, non-urgent tasks
  • Getting distracted by urgent but low-impact activities
  • Trying to do everything instead of focusing on key drivers
  • Not identifying the tasks that will drive disproportionate returns
