Duke Walk-On's Wyoming Camps

A story about how Shaan's college roommate Trevor, a former Duke basketball walk-on candidate, created a successful summer basketball camp business in Wyoming.

"My best friend Trevor was a kid from Wyoming, about 5'9" on a good day, white kid. When I got to Duke, I found out my randomly matched roommate was trying to walk onto the basketball team. I was expecting this 6'8" black dude to show up, and instead this 5'9" white guy shows up from Wyoming.

He was kind of like a Drew Hanlon type - super hard worker, amazing shooter. He was the best high school basketball player in Wyoming, comes to Duke and tries to walk on. He ended up being the last guy cut, then stayed on as water boy hoping for his Rudy moment. That never came - when a spot opened up, they took some other guy because his dad was super rich and a booster of the school.

In the summers, he would go back to Wyoming where people knew him as the Duke player who was a legend in high school basketball. He would run three camps simultaneously. Each kid paid $100 - he was underpricing it like crazy. He would make his whole year's worth of money in just two and a half months. Then he spent the other 9 months out of the year traveling around learning stuff and would come back to do it again the next summer because he had that local brand affinity."
