Hamilton's Crowdfunded Billions
Share
A story about how Hamilton was funded and its creator's compensation structure.
"Hamilton was actually crowdfunded. They had a bunch of patrons chipping in money, and they all get to keep a profit share after a certain amount was recouped. That investment has been paid over 10 times now.
Lin Manuel, who created Hamilton, has like a 7% royalty, so he's made tens of millions of dollars off the profits. The show itself has grossed over $1 billion, and it's like number 2 or 3 among all stage plays. If it keeps going, it'll surpass Lion King, which is at about $2 billion.
The top 10 shows are all doing like hundreds of millions in gross sales. You've got Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia - they're all massive hits. Mamma Mia has been running for 16 years and has done over $600 million in ticket sales. The beautiful thing about these shows is it's the same story, same songs, same jokes every night, done by different casts that are interchangeable, so you're not dependent on any one talent."
