Career Decision Questions Framework
Share
A framework for making career decisions, particularly when deciding whether to leave a current role or pursue a new path.
Core Decision Framework
- Ask yourself these 3 sequential questions:
- "If I wasn't afraid of failing, which path would I pick?"
- "Do I believe that if I put my mind to something, I'll succeed at it?"
- "If yes to both above, then what should I do?"
Key Principles for Career Changes
-
Getting "Single" First
- Must exit current situation before properly assessing new opportunities
- Current role takes up mental space that prevents proper evaluation
- Small benefits of current situation often mask the opportunity cost
-
Fear Management
- Fear and anxiety can be passengers but shouldn't drive decision-making
- Acknowledge fears exist but don't let them control major career choices
Common Career Challenges
-
Two main scenarios this framework addresses:
- "I don't know what I want to do, but I know this isn't it"
- "I know what I want to do but I'm afraid to pursue it"
-
Solution for both:
- First step is always to exit the current situation
- Don't need to have next step figured out immediately
- Create space for proper evaluation of new opportunities
Implementation Notes
-
Need sufficient runway before making changes
- Minimum 6-12 months of savings recommended
- Some suggest 24 months for maximum safety
- Balance between safety and cost of waiting
-
Focus on Action
- Don't wait just for waiting's sake
- Be specific about what you're trying to learn or figure out
- Set clear timelines for decision-making
