First Bitcoin Conference

Sam Parr shares a story about the early days of Bitcoin from a book he was reading called "Digital Gold."

"I'm reading this book called Digital Gold. It's about Bitcoin and the founding early community. There's not actually that many books written about the early characters, which is why I wanted to read it.

They talk about going to their first conference where there were like 50 people there in a shitty restaurant. It checks all the boxes of an early crowd of just nerds who are regarded as freaks and no one takes them seriously. Then one legitimate financier is like 'okay there's something here' and then another one and then another one. Then there's a controversy but they overcome it.

It fits all the stereotypes of these types of stories - a group of weirdos. It's like when someone pitches you a company that you think is really stupid and then it becomes huge. First you think 'this product is dumb,' then 'oh my god people are using this, they're dumb,' and finally 'oh my god everyone's using this, I'm dumb.' That's the process of some of these things. It's the same pattern over and over again."
