Success Requires Luck
Share
Shaan Puri shares his perspective on the relationship between success, luck, and inherent abilities, using examples like Jeff Bezos to illustrate his points.
-
Success vs Magnitude of Success:
- Basic success (yes/no) has little to do with luck
- The magnitude of success has a lot to do with luck
- Example: Bezos would have been successful regardless, but luck influenced becoming world's richest person
-
Key Success Indicators:
- High IQ (top 1%)
- Being "quirky and curious"
- Having singular focus
- Maintaining high intensity (sometimes uncomfortably so)
- Educational background (e.g., top schools)
-
Environmental Factors:
- Family background matters
- Early life decisions can dramatically affect outcomes
- Choice of college
- Choice of roommate
- Timing of relationships
- Adoption (in Bezos' case)
-
Success Prediction:
- Can somewhat predict who will be "luckier"
- Hard to precisely place magnitude of future success
- Looking for people with combination of intelligence and unusual intensity
- Family track record can be an indicator (example: successful siblings)
The perspective emphasizes that while basic success comes from effort and ability, extraordinary success requires additional elements of luck and timing that are largely outside one's control.
