Bitcoin Block Size Debate
Share
Shaan recounts a significant debate in the Bitcoin community about increasing transaction speed.
"In 2014-2015, there was a big debate in Bitcoin about the transaction speed being too slow. Some people said we should make the block size bigger to allow more transactions. Others said we can't change something as fundamental as the block size, arguing it would undermine Bitcoin's credibility.
On one side was Roger Ver, who called himself 'Bitcoin Jesus'. He wanted the quick solution of doubling the block size. The other side, including Adam Back and Peter Todd, wanted to stay true to Satoshi's vision and keep Bitcoin 'pristine'.
The community ultimately went against Roger Ver's side. They created their own thing called Bitcoin Cash, which now has a low reputation. The group that wanted to stay true to the original vision won out, arguing that arbitrarily changing the rules would be like the government printing money."
