Buddhist Chanting ROI

Shaan shares a story about his experience learning Buddhist chanting while working with a sushi chef.

"When I started the sushi restaurant, I was staying in LA with the sushi chef. His mandate was that each of the three co-founders had to come live with him and work at his restaurant for three weeks each, one at a time.

One day he asked if I was religious. I said no. He told me he was Buddhist and asked if I knew anything about Buddhism. I said no. He told me to meet him in the living room at 7 AM the next morning.

He introduced me to this Buddhist chant called 'nam myoho renge kyo.' We chanted these words for one hour straight. I asked what the words meant, but he said I didn't need to know - just the sound itself was therapeutic. Similar to how 'om' works in Hinduism, there's something about the vibration of making the sound that changes you.

By the end of the hour, I had this rush of euphoria. He explained he does it every morning as a form of meditation - a way to quiet the mind by chanting the same thing on loop. After that experience, I became a big believer in chanting. Though I'm not Buddhist, I've continued to do this chanting practice on and off for the last 10 years of my life."
