Kobe's Name Memory Strategy
Share
A story about how Kobe Bryant strategically remembered people's names and details to create lasting impressions, as told by his trainer.
"I asked Kobe, 'Is remembering everyone's name easy for you?' He said 'No, it's not that easy. I just make an effort.' I asked him why he cares to learn all these people's names, and he goes 'Because for most people this is the only time they're ever gonna interact with me. If I remember their name, something so simple, they not only will remember it forever, they'll tell everybody they know about this.'
He said 'So I'm not just making an impression on them, I'm making an impression on a thousand people throughout their lifetime that they're gonna tell this Kobe Bryant story to.'
There was this one time, this trainer Luke was playing pickup basketball with Kobe. Luke missed 6 or 7 shots, and Kobe said 'Damn, you gonna make a shot or what?' Luke responded 'I'm a volume shooter bro.' They laughed and moved on. Three weeks later, Luke comes back to the gym and Kobe goes 'What up Volume?' He had remembered the nickname. Luke was impressed because he never even told Kobe his real name, but Kobe had asked someone what it was. When Luke was trying to sneak out later, Kobe called out 'Damn Luke, aren't you gonna say bye?' Luke was shocked Kobe knew his name and was paying attention to him leaving."
