Virtual Baby Monitors

Jack Smith shares how he created a remote baby monitoring system using virtual assistants in India.

"I have a virtual assistant in India who watches my baby cam all night. He has specific instructions - if the baby wakes up and starts crying, start a timer. If she cries for 3 minutes and goes back to sleep, don't do anything. But if she cries for more than 7 minutes, call me and wake me up.

We have a special phone for that and a backup phone in case the first one breaks. So we only get woken up if our daughter is crying longer than 7 minutes. Now at 2 years and 3 months old, she only wakes up maybe once every 2 months.

I got the idea from Jonathan Swanson, founder of Thumbtack - he called it 'digital night nanny.' I call it 'Deep Sentinel for babies.' The virtual assistant doesn't take a single day off in the year - he's working 365 days. I guess he's having Thanksgiving and Christmas with the baby monitor on loudspeaker with his family."
