Emmett's Management Characterization

Shaan tells a story about getting unexpectedly burned during an interview with Emmett, the former CEO of Twitch.

"I did an interview with Emmett the other day, and there was one really funny part where he just burned me so bad. I was so shook by it I couldn't even mentally recover for like 5 minutes.

I was trying to set him up, saying 'I learned so much from you' and mentioned this model he taught me about how to format conversations. He explained you could come in and say one of four things: here's my decision FYI, here's what I think we should do - do I have your approval, I don't know what to do could you help me, or here's an update on what we discussed.

I asked him where he learned that, and he goes 'Yeah that's really good for like mid-level managers.' Then he adds 'If you're a super seasoned exec I guess I would do it differently, but that's really good for you're not junior but you're not like a super seasoned exec.'

It was absolutely true - I'm not a super seasoned corporate executive. But I was like, I don't want to be mid-level anything. Even if they're like 'what floor are you staying on' and I'm on the 9th floor, I'm like 'No no, I don't stay in the mid-level of nothing, don't ever put me there.'"
