Choose Harder Options
Share
A decision-making framework that recognizes our brain's natural tendency to avoid difficulty, suggesting that when faced with seemingly equal choices, we should lean towards the harder option.
Core Concept: "Easy choices, hard life. Hard choices, easy life."
- Originally from Jerzy Gregorek, popularized by Tim Ferriss
- Making hard decisions early leads to easier outcomes long-term
- Delaying difficult choices typically results in worse outcomes
How the Framework Works
- When faced with two seemingly equal options:
- Identify which choice is harder
- Recognize your brain is naturally discounting the difficult option
- The harder choice is likely the better choice
- Your brain applies an artificial "tax" on difficult decisions
Common Applications
-
Personnel Decisions
- If you think "should I fire this person?" - you probably should
- Exception: First ensure role clarity and expectations are well-defined
- Never question keeping high performers
-
Business Decisions
- Hiring: Don't settle for B/C candidates due to fatigue
- Continue difficult processes even when tired
- Make hard decisions quickly rather than delaying
Why It Works
- Brain naturally avoids short-term pain
- What appears as equal choices are often not truly equal
- Your mind artificially equalizes options by discounting the harder choice
- Pushing through difficulty often leads to better long-term outcomes
Implementation Tips
- Recognize when you're stuck between two choices
- Explicitly identify which option is more difficult
- Account for your brain's natural bias against difficulty
- Make the harder choice quickly rather than delaying
