Giggle Steps Method
Share
A goal-setting framework that focuses on making the first step so ridiculously small that it makes you giggle, removing the fear and pressure of starting.
Core Goal Setting Methods
-
Picture/Movie Scene Goals
- Use visual representations instead of just written text
- Find pictures that represent the end goal (e.g. house on Zillow)
- Creates emotional connection rather than just logical understanding
-
Floor and Ceiling Goals
- Set a minimum acceptable outcome (floor)
- Set an ambitious best-case scenario (ceiling)
- Helps avoid disappointment while maintaining ambition
- Example: Podcast goals
- Floor: Make 15 new friends through guest interviews
- Ceiling: Build large, engaged audience base
-
Goals and Anti-Goals
- Define what you want to achieve
- Also define what you don't want to happen
- Helps avoid unintended negative consequences
- Example: Want successful podcast but don't want it to feel like work
-
In Your Face Daily
- See your goals every single day
- Use reminders in Slack or other tools
- Make goals impossible to ignore
- Repost goals weekly to team members
-
Tip of Tongue Test
- Should be able to instantly articulate your goal
- If you can't explain it quickly, it's not clear enough
- Must include timeframe for completion
-
Belief-Driven Action
- Don't move unless you actually believe it will happen
- Belief drives action level
- Massive belief = massive action = good results
- Weak belief leads to timid action and poor results
-
Revise Up or Abort Down
- Either make goals more ambitious
- Or completely abandon them
- Don't compromise down gradually
- Prevents getting stuck in mediocrity
The Giggle Step Method
- Make first step so simple it makes you laugh
- Example: Flossing teeth
- Don't start with flossing all teeth
- Start with flossing just one tooth
- Place floss next to sink
- Removes fear and built-up pressure
- Makes starting feel achievable
