Scott Storch's $100M Downfall
Share
A story about Scott Storch, a music producer who made $100M producing hits for major artists, then lost it all through excessive spending and cocaine addiction.
"Scott Storch was a producer who made some of the biggest hits - like the piano keys at the beginning of 'Still Dre.' He did 'Candy Shop,' 'Naughty Girl,' worked with everybody - Beyonce, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown. He amassed a fortune of about $100 million doing this as a producer behind the scenes.
He got addicted to two things: spending and cocaine. He was spending 2-3-4-5 million dollars a month. He had houses he forgot about. He had $5,000 worth of glass figurines that broke at a party - they just swept them up in a dustbin. He had a $500,000 crystal bottle of perfume that some drunk girl knocked over at a party. He had a $4 million yellow diamond pinky ring.
He started as the keyboard guy for The Roots after dropping out of 9th grade. He taught himself piano by ear using a tape player. Through The Roots, he met Dr. Dre and made his fortune by taking all of Dre's reject projects. He would get paid $100,000 to do a single track and would do 10 a week.
Then he stopped working and just partied. He was still making money but hadn't worked in 3 years and was just spending crazy. When asked about blowing $100 million, he said 'It happens. I know cats that blew double that.' He grew up poor and suddenly had infinite money, infinite options, and didn't know how to say no."
