Bezos' 50 VC Meetings

A story about Jeff Bezos's early fundraising struggles for Amazon.

"Bezos took 50 meetings with venture capitalists to get his first million dollars. The most common question he was asked was 'What is the internet?' He said the internet's growing, and they were going to sell books. When he pitched the first investors, he said 'I think this could make $100 million a year if we're lucky.'

The Everything Store was actually a code name for Amazon while he was at the hedge fund he worked for, David Shaw. They were originally going to incubate it within the hedge fund. But Bezos knew they could sell books, and then he knew they could sell other things, but he didn't know they would invent things like AWS. He couldn't have predicted all that would happen."
