Three Relationship Responses
Share
A framework for understanding how to respond to actions in relationships, particularly focusing on the power of praise versus punishment.
Core Concept
- There are only 3 possible responses to any action someone takes:
- Punish them for doing it
- Ignore that they did it
- Praise them for doing it
Practical Application Example
- If you want your partner to do something more (like back scratches):
- Wait until they do it naturally
- Immediately reward/praise when they do
- They will want to do it more because of the positive reinforcement
- Continue rewarding to maintain the behavior
Corporate Implementation
- Two main approaches to building company culture:
-
Punishment-driven cultures
- Examples: Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, McKinsey, Bain
- Creates toxic work environments
- Leads to burnout
- People hate their jobs and lives
- Constantly raising the bar of what it takes to not get punished
-
Praise-driven cultures
- Get more performance through praise
- Creates better working environments
- Sustainable long-term approach
- People want to work and contribute
- Focuses on positive reinforcement
-
Key Insights
- Simple concept but difficult to execute consistently
- Most environments are set up to punish people
- Praise-based systems can achieve equal or better results
- Requires conscious effort to break punishment-based habits
- Can be applied to personal relationships and business contexts
