Thailand's Off-Market Room Strategy

Ramit shares a story about learning a luxury principle from a hotel manager in Thailand.

"We stayed at a high-end hotel in Thailand. I always ask to see the general manager and go on a walk on the property with them. During our walk in December, I asked about their occupancy. They had about 40 hotel rooms, and he said Christmas was their busiest time, but they always keep one room off market.

I asked why they would do that during their most high-demand, expensive time of the year. He said, 'Luxury is about always having something in your back pocket. Maybe our regular guests who come every year for the last decade bring an extra family member - we need to be able to accommodate that.'

It reminded me of my mom growing up - she always had extra food if we brought a friend over. It's luxury, just at a different level. So same thing with money - I want to always build in a buffer so if something happens, we're good."
