Paris Lines Inspired Gilt
Share
A story about how Kevin Ryan got the idea for Gilt Group by observing fashion retail behavior in Paris.
"Kevin Ryan was the 20th employee at Doubleclick and became CEO. Google bought Doubleclick for 3-4 billion dollars. With his personal earnings of $20 million, he started Silicon Alley Group, which created MongoDB, Business Insider, Zola and other companies.
One of their companies was Gilt Group, which did flash deals for women's clothing. He got the idea when he was walking down the street in Paris and saw a long line outside a women's store. He asked a woman what it was about, and she explained they do these deals every day only for an hour at noon. They were starting to do them online but still did them in person. He thought 'I'm going to do that in America' and that's how Gilt started."
