Ramon's $10M Soap Blog

A story about how Ramon, an entrepreneur, built and sold a soap opera blog business for $10M despite never watching soap operas himself.

"Ramon told me his life story when I first met him. He had this substance - raised in the Netherlands, was out on his own at a young age, single father to his son, trained MMA. He seemed like a self-made guy in many ways.

When I asked about his last business, expecting something meaningful given his background, he says 'Oh, I created a soap opera blog and sold it for $10 million.' I was shocked and asked if he loved soap operas. He said 'No, I've never seen one in my life.'

He explained he went on Facebook when there was an arbitrage opportunity where you could buy page likes for about a cent. He figured out once he got people to like his page, he could post a link to get them to his website for about 7 cents, and then Google AdSense would pay him 9 or 12 cents. He spun up 22 Facebook pages about different niches - wrestling, soccer, politics, everything he could think of.

The top three performing categories were right-wing conservative politics (which he avoided), wrestling, and soap operas. He chose soap operas. He found out people mainly cared about spoilers - what's going to happen on tomorrow's Days of Our Lives. He would just sign up to get the sneak peek synopsis of what happens tomorrow, publish it as long-form content, and hired people to write for it. He ended up selling the whole thing for $10 million in cash."
