NBA First-Half Betting Edge

A story about how professional sports bettor Haralabob found and exploited a systematic edge in NBA betting markets.

"This guy Haralabob was a professional sports bettor who discovered something interesting in Vegas sportsbooks. He noticed two things about basketball over/under bets. First, the bookies weren't accounting for how scoring was different between halves. In the second half, scores are usually higher because losing teams start fouling to stop the clock, get free throws, and try to catch up with three-pointers.

Second, the bookies were simply taking the full game over/under line and dividing it by two to set the first-half line. Very few people bet first-half over/unders because it's not exciting - who cares about the halftime score? But he realized this created a small edge where the first half would almost always go under. He even identified three specific teams whose coaches used the fouling strategy more frequently in second halves.

He didn't tell anyone about this edge. Instead, he started hiring people to place bets at different sportsbooks because the books would limit how much he could bet. He'd pay guys to walk up and bet $25,000 on games, having multiple people betting at different casinos simultaneously to maximize his advantage while this arbitrage existed.

He parlayed this success into working for Mark Cuban and the Dallas Mavericks. Over his 10-year betting career, he found about three different edges - the Shaq and Kobe Lakers, this first-half over/under bet that was mispriced, and he just went all in on these mispricings whenever he found them."
