Adventure Builds Value

Ryan Petersen shares his experience of moving to China in 2005 and emphasizes the value of pursuing adventure in your twenties. He believes that conscious value selection, particularly choosing adventure, can lead to unique experiences and personal growth.

  • Value-Driven Decision Making:

    • People often go through life without consciously selecting their values
    • Adventure was his primary value until age 25-26
    • It's important to introspect and understand what drives you
  • Benefits of Foreign Adventure:

    • Learning a foreign language provides humility and perspective
    • Forces you to problem-solve in unfamiliar situations
    • Helps in relating to others in your own country
    • Creates unique experiences (like biking from China to Vietnam without proper maps)
  • Modern vs Past Adventure:

    • Pre-iPhone era required more problem-solving and resilience
      • No GPS, translation apps, or easy navigation
      • Had to rely on asking strangers for help
      • Required figuring things out independently
    • Current travel is "too easy" with modern technology
      • Uber/Didi available everywhere
      • Google Translate and maps make navigation simple
      • Less challenging than previous eras
  • Practical Approach:

    • Adventure is achievable by going to cheaper places
    • Don't need an exit plan or detailed strategy
    • Being open to learning about culture, history, and economics
    • Willing to appear inexperienced or "look like an idiot" while learning
  • Long-term Value:

    • Builds problem-solving capabilities
    • Develops confidence in figuring things out
    • Creates foundation for future challenges
    • Provides valuable perspective and humility
