In-House Operations Enable Speed
Share
Paul Tran shares his philosophy on building an in-house operation at Manscaped, emphasizing the importance of maintaining control over key business functions rather than outsourcing to agencies. This approach, while requiring more internal resources, allows for faster iteration and deeper expertise.
-
Core Business Philosophy:
- Must go both "wide and deep" in business knowledge
- Can't be just a "jack of all trades, master of none"
- Need to master multiple aspects of the business
-
In-House Operations:
- All video production handled internally
- Media buying managed by internal team
- R&D conducted in-house
- Creative development done internally
- Team of 72 employees managing all operations
-
R&D Evolution:
- Started with contract manufacturers and third-party labs
- Transitioned to in-house R&D lab ~14 months ago
- Hired first research chemist to build internal knowledge
- Significantly reduced iteration cycles compared to external labs
-
Operational Challenges:
- Faced inventory management issues
- Once sold out of entire Q1 inventory by December 16th
- Family members had to help pack inventory in warehouse
- Scaling challenges with multiple sales channels:
- D2C
- Amazon
- International
- Retail (requires year-advance planning)
-
Benefits of In-House Approach:
- Faster iteration on products
- Better control over development process
- Ability to make quick changes based on feedback
- Eliminated lengthy back-and-forth with external labs
