Share

The Four Communication Frames
- FYI (Information Sharing)
- "I'm doing this, just want you to be in the loop"
- No action required, purely informational
- Keeps leadership informed of ongoing activities
- Approval Seeking
- "I'm planning to do this, do you approve?"
- Requires explicit permission or sign-off
- Clear request for authorization
- Decision Help
- "I'm trying to decide between A and B (or A, B, and C)"
- Seeking guidance on direction
- Looking for help in thinking through options
- Status Update
- "Remember that thing we agreed on? Here's what happened"
- Closing the loop on previous discussions
- Sharing outcomes and learnings
Additional Communication Principles
-
What, Why, So What Framework
- What happened/is happening
- Why it happened/matters
- So what are we going to do about it/what do you need
-
Benefits of this approach:
- Eliminates wandering conversations
- Makes communication more efficient
- Creates clear expectations for both parties
- Allows more time for meaningful discussion
- Simplifies complex interactions
This framework helps streamline communication by immediately establishing the purpose and expected outcome of any interaction with leadership.
