Lean Bone Broth Success

Justin Mares shares the success story of his bone broth company Kettle and Fire.

"In February 2015, I quit tech - I had a software company and decided to launch a bone broth company. Sam thought I was throwing my life away, that I was going to be one of the greats in tech but was making a mistake.

Now Kettle and Fire has surpassed $100 million in annual revenue. We've only raised $10 million in primary capital since starting the company nine years ago, so it's been pretty capital efficient. We've been focused on building both the trend and a good business from the beginning.

We're profitable and running with just 34 people for our size of business, which is quite good scale. I'm focused on making us the best operating ecommerce company in America. Most big food companies were started pre-1900 - they're bloated, large, and I think many of them are poisoning people while paying lobbyists to protect their interests.

There's a huge opportunity to both out-innovate these big CPG companies and run a better business. No one at Kellogg's in Battle Creek, Michigan is looking at how to use AI to automate workflows and processes, whereas we have live work streams at Kettle and Fire figuring out how to apply the craziest technology to run the best possible company."
