K-Shaped Economy Framework
Share
AI isn't taking your whole job - it's unbundling the tasks within your job. Here's how to think about it and win.
The K-Shaped Economy concept
- Jobs are bundles of tasks, not single activities
- Even a grocery store worker has multiple tasks: restocking, checkout, bagging, pushing carts
- AI won't eliminate entire jobs but will transform the task bundle
- 80% of tasks will be replaced by AI
- 20% of tasks will be enhanced by AI - things you'll do much better with AI assistance
The wrong way to think about AI
- Don't try to become top 1%, 5%, or even 10% in AI skills
- Don't compare yourself to AI geniuses spending all day on this
- Don't compete with 22-year-olds whose brains are "super plastic" and can learn anything fast
- Don't feel like you need to beat technically brilliant people
The right way to think about AI
- You're already top 10% in your domain (business, content, your industry)
- Just get to 50th percentile in AI - "not that hard to do"
- AI multiplies against all your other existing skills
- Get "just good enough, just dangerous enough" with AI
- Leverage your 10-20 years of domain knowledge with basic AI skills
Real examples of AI task transformation
Content strategist role
- Set up machines to constantly scan YouTube for what adjacent channels are doing
- Identify outlier videos automatically
- Analyze why those videos worked
- Reference against your brand corpus
- Generate custom pitches based on successful patterns
Walking and creating content
- Go for a walk, pop in an AirPod, just ramble for 30 minutes
- Talk naturally about ideas without looking at a screen
- Hand the recording to ChatGPT or similar service
- AI removes rambling parts, structures and organizes it
- Get 85-90% finished content without traditional "work"
- "My dad would be like 'this is not work, what are you doing'"
The opportunity multiplier
- Musical chairs analogy: If you add 50 people but 50x the chairs, competition doesn't matter
- AI is like every product in every category just came up for grabs
- Plus whole new categories that didn't exist before
- The opportunity set is "so much bigger" that more competition is irrelevant
- You'd rather have a huge multiplier on possible ways to win
Real business impact
- Billion dollar company example: Doubled profit margin with three AI changes
- Improved customer support with AI
- Made developers more productive
- Got rid of junior programmers not good at using AI
Winners vs losers
- Winners: Use AI to 10x or 100x their output
- Losers: Say "this is too new, this is too fast, we should keep it old school"
Hiring reality
- Every company needs "one of these AI guys"
- Actually, you need "many of them in the company"
- "As many as you can have"
- One executive "just created AI that could be like a manager for these projects"
