Alabama QB's Million-Dollar Start
Share
A story about Nick Saban, Alabama's football coach, discussing a controversial situation with their freshman quarterback's NIL earnings.
"The coach Nick Saban came out and said it creates a weird situation - our freshman quarterback has made 7 figures and hasn't even played a game yet. His teammates aren't making that money, which creates an awkward dynamic.
There were three reactions to this. First, some people thought maybe there's truth to that. Second, others pointed out that for years people like Nick Saban have made millions as coaches while players played for free, so now he has a problem when players make money?
The third reaction was the super mega evil version - Saban added this line at the end where he said 'he's making all this money because of our brand, because he's a quarterback at Alabama.' It became a recruiting pitch at the same time. He was fake being outraged but really was dog whistling to all the high school athletes - 'come to Alabama, that check is pretty big, this guy hasn't even played yet and he's getting this type of money.'
All the college coaches, players, and media were mad at him. It was a master stroke."
