Knowledge Vacuum Strategy
Share
Austin Rief from Morning Brew describes his "knowledge vacuum" strategy for rapidly learning from experienced hires. Here's how it works.
Core Philosophy
- Goal is to compress 10 years of someone's knowledge into 2-3 months
- Target experienced hires who are 10+ years older with deep domain expertise
- Approach learning like a vacuum - try to absorb everything possible
- Aim to eventually know more than the person you're learning from
Implementation Strategy
- Hire experienced executives (COO, Chief Content Officer, etc.)
- Immediately start "pestering" them with questions
- Spend extensive 1-on-1 time with them
- Focus on understanding their accumulated knowledge from previous roles
- Take an aggressive learning posture - constantly probe and question
Key Behaviors
- Be maniacally focused on learning
- Ask lots of questions
- Shadow them closely
- Don't be afraid to "pester" them
- Maintain a competitive mindset about surpassing their knowledge
Mindset Required
- Competitive drive to learn faster than others
- Willingness to be aggressive in pursuit of knowledge
- Recognition that experienced hires have valuable accumulated wisdom
- Desire to compress learning timeframes dramatically
- Goal of eventually surpassing the mentor's knowledge level
This approach helped Austin rapidly scale Morning Brew by learning from experienced executives while maintaining a founder's level of understanding across all areas of the business.
