Technology Windows Framework

The Technology Windows Framework explains how technological innovation creates time-limited opportunities for startups before markets saturate.

Core Concept of Technology Windows

  • Technology windows open for a fixed amount of time when new technology emerges
  • During this period, many successful companies can be built in rapid succession
  • Once the "low hanging fruit" gets eaten, the window closes
  • Very few successful companies emerge in that category after the window closes
  • Windows can reopen when fundamental technology changes occur again

Historical Examples of Technology Windows

  • Railroads: 40-year window, no successful railroad companies emerged after
  • Automobiles: 25-year window (Buick, Dodge, Ford, Cadillac, GM, Chevrolet, Lincoln, Chrysler)
    • Window remained closed for about 80 years
    • Reopened due to battery technology (Tesla, Rivian)
  • B2B SaaS: 20-year window (now largely eaten)
  • Current open windows: AI (starting 2016), robotics, 3D printing

The Technology Window Lifecycle

  1. Invention Phase: Technology is invented, only hobbyists play with it out of interest and creativity
  2. Status Moment: One of the hobbyists achieves status and wealth using the tech
    • Examples: Marc Andreessen (browser), Palmer Luckey (VR), Elon Musk (OpenAI)
  3. Knowledge Diffusion: Information spreads through conferences, podcasts, newsletters, Twitter
  4. Competition Floods: Market becomes saturated with competitors
  5. New Incumbents Emerge: Companies with defensible advantages take over
    • Defensibility may come from hardware, scale requirements, or network effects
  6. Window Closes: Technology window becomes 90% closed with only a few exceptions afterward

Why Hardware is the New Frontier

  • "The low hanging fruit of software has been eaten"
  • 7 out of 10 most valuable companies now have extreme hardware components
  • In a world where you can code a CRM overnight, hardware provides stronger moats
  • Current technology windows (AI, robotics, 3D printing) enable building things that couldn't be built 10-15 years ago
