350-Foot Prometheus Statue

Sam Parr shares a story about an ambitious monument project planned for San Francisco's Alcatraz.

"There's this guy trying to raise money for a monument based in San Francisco on Alcatraz. They want to build a massive statue of Prometheus that's 350 feet tall. It represents the spirit of innovation and courage for manifest destiny and inborn nobility.

They're raising $170 million to build this statue, and in their deck, they show the revenue and profit of other monuments. The Statue of Liberty does $154 million a year in revenue, $70 million in net income. Mount Rushmore does $50 million in sales and $20 million in net income. Pearl Harbor does $50 million, $23 million in net income.

They're projecting to make $100 million a year in profit. When I googled it, they have a Substack and claim Joe Lonsdale is on board and all these amazing people are involved. But this will never happen in San Francisco - they're not going to have any part of a statue that touts manifest destiny and inborn nobility, especially with a shirtless, ripped dude in the Bay of San Francisco. San Francisco is the antithesis of a ripped, alpha-looking heterosexual male - this is not what the culture is about."
