Cole Hocker's Olympic Record

Sam Parr tells the story of Cole Hocker's unexpected victory in the Olympic 1500m race.

"Going into the 1500 meters, there were two clear favorites. First was Jacob Engelbretsen, who I call the Justin Bieber of track and field. He was raised by his father with 7 siblings, some who are also elite runners. In Norway, they're like reality TV stars. Jacob has one of the fastest mile times ever and the world record in the 2 mile, but he comes off as arrogant.

The other favorite was Josh Kerr from the UK, who has more of a quirky, likeable British attitude. They had been talking trash to each other leading up to the race, which is unusual in track and field.

In the final race, with 200 meters left, Jacob was in front with Josh Kerr behind him waiting to kick. Then out of nowhere, Cole Hocker, who had the slowest time of most runners in the field, comes through. With 100 meters left, he's boxed in between Josh and Jacob. He tries to take off but Jacob blocks him, making him lose momentum. Somehow Jakob moves slightly right, allowing Cole to slip through on the inside rail.

Cole not only wins, but Jacob fades to 4th, Josh gets 2nd, and Cole runs the Olympic record - the fastest time ever in the 1500 meter and the 7th fastest time in history. He crushed his personal record. It was one of the best races I've ever seen."
