First Refugee Olympic Medal

Sam Parr shares a story about a historic moment for the Olympic refugee program.

"Starting in 2016 in Rio, the Olympics did something cool - they created a team for refugee athletes. These are people like wrestlers who fled Iran because of protests, Syrian athletes, and others who can't compete for their home countries. They come into the stadium under the Olympic flag.

They have this one boxer from Cameroon who had to flee the country. She's now guaranteed to get at least a bronze medal, maybe silver. This is the first time any refugee athlete has ever medaled in the Olympics.

A lot of these athletes fled terrible situations - some were escaping being recruited as child soldiers, others had to walk across entire countries. Now they're in the Olympics. When they enter the stadium, they wear blue Olympic jerseys. It's really cool to see this group of people from all over the world, with similar troubled backgrounds, united under one jersey."
