12-Year-Old College Student

Sam Parr shares a story about Andrew Chen, a partner at Andreessen Horowitz, who attended college at an extraordinarily young age.

"When Andrew Chen was in 6th grade, he took the SAT and scored really high. The University of Washington has a program where they select 5-10 students per year who are in 6th or 7th grade to attend college. Andrew was selected, skipped 7th grade, and went straight to college, living in the dorms.

Emmett Sheer from Twitch was also part of this program. What's even more interesting is that Andrew was embarrassed about his age and didn't tell many people. His college peers assumed he was 18 like everyone else. He even dated someone who didn't find out his real age until senior year when everyone was turning 21, and he had to admit he was only 16 or 17.

The University of Washington still runs this program today. They have psychologists and therapists meet with the kids every month to discuss what's going on. When I asked Andrew if it was weird to skip high school, in typical genius fashion, he responded, 'Well, when you think about it, adolescence is really just a societal constraint.'"
