Cucinelli's Principled Luxury

Sam Parr shares a story about an Italian luxury brand founder who built a successful company while maintaining strict lifestyle principles.

"There's this Italian company called Brunello Cucinelli that makes really expensive cashmere clothing. The founder started it because he was an expert at cashmere. He said 'My dad worked his ass off, working 7 days a week, and I wanted to create a humane workplace.'

His daily schedule is fascinating: He wakes up at 6AM at his countryside home, goes to the office at 8:30. At 1PM he walks home for lunch, takes a 30-minute siesta. At 3PM goes back to work. At 5:30 the whole company stops working and takes a late afternoon walk because they believe rest is super important to being soulful. He has a light supper at 8PM, and at 9PM heads to the cafe to meet friends where they discuss politics, philosophy, religion late into the night.

I wondered if this guy was legit - turns out he is. The company is publicly traded with a market cap of $4 billion. He's building his company to create a great workplace and great products, not to make money first. And because of that, I want to give him more money and he's going to make more profit."
