Shaan Puri shares how Carrd, a simple website builder, found unexpected success through political movements.
"About 7-10 years ago, it was really popular to create personal websites. You had Wix, Weebly, those were hot YC startups, Squarespace was on every podcast advertising. Then Carrd came out - just simple single page websites.
I met the founder one time and he told me their numbers - they were just crushing it. He said something really random happened: every political movement started using Carrd. During the campaigns in 2016 and 2020, thousands of websites got created using Carrd to promote election stuff or any cause. It became a thing for causes.
They bootstrapped for 10 years with just 2 people - AJ and one other guy. Then they finally raised a venture round because they couldn't deny it was now much bigger than a 2-person project. They were like 'we should probably hire an employee and see what we can do with this.'"
