Sam Parr shares a story about his experience visiting hedge fund offices and the reality versus perception.
"I've been spending time in New York and I cold emailed people who work at hedge funds. I said 'Hey, I'm not a competitor, I'm just a passionate interested person. Can I see your office and sit at your computer? I just want to see what you do all day.'
You go to these offices and I would have thought they were like Wolf of Wall Street where it's buzzing and phones are ringing. It's really just quiet with a bunch of nerds looking at computer screens. They have 4 screens and incredibly complicated software. These people are getting paid hundreds of thousands, sometimes tens of millions of dollars to be good at this one thing.
I talked to a guy who worked at Bridgewater recently and asked 'Bridgewater - aren't you guys the best?' He said 'Sometimes we're the best, but the last 15 years we've sucked. We've underperformed the market.' That's insane - 1500 employees, tens or hundreds of billions in assets, you're all paid the best there is, and you still can't beat it."
