McCarthy Reframes Interceptions

Shaan tells a story about how a rookie NFL quarterback had an impressive mindset after throwing an interception.

"JJ McCarthy is a rookie football player, quarterback for the Vikings. He just got drafted and like any team that sucks, they draft a quarterback hoping he's gonna turn the franchise around. He just had their first preseason game and he threw an interception.

After the game, the interviewer asks him, 'JJ you go out there, you want to perform well but you throw that interception. Talk me through what was going through your mind.'

This guy's response was epic. He goes, 'What was going through my mind? What an opportunity.' The interviewer goes 'What? An opportunity?' And he goes, 'Yeah, I mean my success in my career is gonna be based on my resilience, my ability to bounce back from mistakes. I throw an interception - what an opportunity to learn, to get better and to improve.'

I was like, wow, that was an uncommon response to a very common situation. Most guys are down on it, but they'll lie and say 'Well, we just had to focus on the next play.' But this guy was so genuine when he said 'what an opportunity.'"
