Paper Cut Problem Framework
Share
A framework for standing out at a company by identifying and fixing small but persistent problems that others have ignored.
Core Concept
- Find annoying problems that are never urgent enough to fix
- Take initiative to solve these issues without being asked
- Get recognition for solving problems others have accepted as permanent
How to Execute
- Look for problems in first 2 weeks at company
- Focus on issues that:
- Cause regular minor frustration
- Aren't critical enough to be prioritized
- Can be fixed with focused effort
- Impact multiple people
- Spend personal time (like a Saturday) to fix it
- Fix it completely, not partially
Why It Works
- Shows initiative and problem-solving ability
- Gets noticed for doing things beyond job description
- Demonstrates ability to identify and execute solutions
- Builds goodwill with coworkers who faced the annoyance
- Creates immediate positive impact in new role
Real Example Shared
- Janitor at bakery fixed broken shelf in first week
- Shelf had been broken for 8+ months
- Previous employees just accepted and worked around it
- New employee immediately identified and fixed it
- Stood out and got recognized for taking initiative
Key Principles
- You don't get extra recognition for doing your job
- Must find things beyond job description
- Look for problems others have become blind to
- Take action without being asked
- Focus on complete solutions, not partial fixes
