Hell Yes Decision Framework
Share
A framework for making better decisions by raising your standards for what you say "yes" to, helping achieve laser-like focus.
Core Principle
- "You can do anything but you can't do everything"
- Focus is about saying no to good things to make room for great things
- Need to raise your "yes threshold" from "pretty good" to "hell yes"
Implementation Steps
- Raise Your Yes Threshold
- Move from saying yes to "pretty good" opportunities
- Only commit to things that generate a "hell yes" response
- Acknowledge and bring awareness to how low your current threshold is
- Exception: Personal "hell yes" activities (like trips with friends) are okay
- Time Management Structure
- Switch from "Manager's Schedule" to "Maker's Schedule"
- Manager Schedule: Filled with constant meetings and interruptions
- Maker Schedule: Long uninterrupted blocks (2.5-3 hours) for deep work
- Create 2-3 focused work blocks daily
- Morning block
- Post-lunch block
- Optional evening block
- Avoid the "zebra calendar" (striped with constant meetings)
- Clarity Pyramid
- Mission: Your big "why"
- Be honest about true mission, not fancy mission statements
- 1-Year Goals
- Set both "floor" goals (minimum acceptable)
- Set "FYA" (F*** Yeah Awesome) goals for stretch targets
- Monthly Execution
- Break down into people, product, and finance targets
- Check-in monthly against the full pyramid
- Decision Framework
- Write out clear "Yes" and "No" lists
- Identify what you must force yourself to do
- Acknowledge what you must consciously avoid
- Focus on things against your nature that need conscious effort
