Guy Spier's Thank You Notes
Share
Shaan shares a story about investor Guy Spier using thank you notes to build relationships and eventually meet Warren Buffett.
"Guy Spier read the book 'Influence' by Robert Cialdini. He read about the guy who was the number one car salesman in the world. This salesman would send out thousands of handwritten notes to anybody he would meet. The letter was very simple - he would write their name and 'I like you.'
Guy decided to implement this. He started writing 3 thank you notes a day. He changed 'I like you' to 'thank you' because it felt less weird. He'd write 'Thank you for...' and always find something to thank them for.
This led to him meeting Warren Buffett. After attending an event by Monish Pabrai, a famous investor, Guy wrote him a thank you note. Monish called him the next day, saying Guy was the only person who'd ever written him a thank you note after these meetings.
They had lunch, and during that lunch, Monish suggested they bid on Warren Buffett's charity lunch together. They won the bid, and that's how Guy ended up meeting Warren Buffett - all because of a simple thank you note."
