Hand-Cover Curiosity Test
Share
A guide to writing effectively by focusing on creating curiosity and maintaining reader engagement. The key is making each sentence lead naturally to the next.
The Hand-Cover Test Technique
- Cover entire text except first two sentences
- Ask: "Would someone want to read the next sentence?"
- Continue revealing one sentence at a time
- Each sentence should create desire to read the next
- Goal is to maintain engagement throughout piece
Key Writing Principles
- Start with strongest/most provocative statement
- Don't bury the lead with unnecessary context
- Create a "slippery slope" effect where readers naturally fall into the content
- First 2-3 sentences are critical for hooking readers
- 80-90% of people only read headlines, so opening must be compelling
Sentence Structure Tips
- Vary sentence length for rhythm
- Start with shorter sentences
- Use medium length sentences in middle
- Save longer sentences for when reader is "rested"
- Create musical flow through sentence variation
Engagement Techniques
- Insert reader's internal dialogue
- Address potential questions directly
- Use phrases like "you're probably wondering..."
- Create curiosity gaps
- Pay off promises quickly - don't delay satisfaction
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Starting with background/context
- Using long introductions
- Assuming reader will stick around
- Making reader wait for valuable information
- Not testing engagement sentence by sentence
